Walt Disney first concieved of the ride as a walk-through attraction in his original Anaheim park’s New Orleans Square, trusting one of his most gifted imagineers, Marc Davis, to create the mood and ambience for his latest brainchild. Davis was widely known as Disney’s Ladies Man because of his incredible work animating Cinderella, Alice, Tinker Bell, Briar Rose, Maleficent and Cruella De Vil. However, after the unprecedented success of the Disney designed pavilions at the 1964 World’s Fair, Walt decided to use the revolutionary technique of audio animatronics to push his entertainment envelope and the simple pirate-themed walk-thru soon became the fabulous cornerstone of New Orleans Square. The hugely popular attraction opened on March 18th, 1967 and has enthralled 3,400 guests an hour ever since. Gifted sculptor and long-time Imagineer, Blaine Gibson, brought Marc Davis’s drawings to three-dimensional life and his pirate figures have not only become become American icons, but their likenesses proved to be so famous that director Michael Bay decided to copy them for some of the characters in Walt Disney’s PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN. THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL starring Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, and the three sequels that followed. Marc Davis and Blaine Gibson were joined by a host of other Imagineers, including Yale Gracey, John Hench, and Marc Davis’ talented wife, Alice, while the attraction’s narration and famous song were written by X. If you are a fan of the ride, imagine owning this stunning replica of one of the attraction’s most-used marauders!
